About Crater Lake and Wizard Island

Crater Lake occupies a volcanic caldera. Wizard Island is a younger cinder cone that grew inside it as the basin filled with rain and snowmelt. Most of the volcanic structure lies below the lake’s surface. In this view, the island’s cone interrupts the broad water, while the enclosing cliffs make the lake’s bowl-like setting easy to recognize.

Ideas for coloring this scene

Try a rich blue for the lake, with a lighter strip along the shore. Use forest green on the island and rim, and brown-gray for exposed rock. Keep the island smaller in visual emphasis than the surrounding expanse of water.
